Are they too pretty to eat? Yes, you can eat the flowers. And once you start, an ordinary plate becomes downright magical.
The garden is full of ingredients hiding in plain sight. From peppery nasturtiums and delicate violets to roses, calendula and other edible blooms, flowers can bring unexpected flavors, colors and a little bit of wonder into the kitchen.
We’ll explore which flowers are actually edible, what they taste like and what on earth you can do with them once you pick them.
We’ll discuss using fresh and dried flowers in salads, teas, drinks, desserts and savory dishes, along with easy ideas for floral sugars, salts and other beautiful preparations. You’ll also learn ways to harvest and dry flowers so the season doesn’t have to end when the garden does.
And because “pretty” absolutely does not mean “edible,” we’ll spend time on safe identification, harvesting and sourcing. You’ll learn why florist flowers don’t belong on your plate, what to consider when gathering your own in the wild, and how to confidently discern dinner from decoration.
Whether you garden, forage, or simply think your food could use more flowers, come discover just how delicious the garden can be. Come away with a packet of easy ideas you can take home to your own kitchen. No previous gardening, foraging or herbal experience necessary.
